TCP/IP Protocol Suite and IP Addressing:

Comparisions to the TCP/IP and OSI models are covered, with emphasis given to the differences between the two. The structure of the IP addressing scheme is covered including how network addresses are assigned to governments, businesses and other entities.

Vocabulary - Key Terms:
  • (FTP) File Transfer Protocol- Connection-Oriented service that uses TCP to transfer files between computers that have FTP.

  • (TFTP) Trivial Transfer Protocol- Connectionless service that uses that uses the User Datagram Protocol(UDP)
  • (NFS) Network File System- Distributed file system protocol that allows file access to a remote storage device such as a hard disk across a network.
  • (SMTP) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol- Transmission of e-mails over a network.
  • Telnet-Capability to remotely access another computer.

IP addresses are assigned to hosts in the following ways:
  • Statically – manually, by a network administrator
  • Dynamically – automatically, using reverse address resolution protocol, bootstrap protocol (BOOTP), or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

Key Concepts:
  • TCP/IP combines the OSI application, presentation, and session layers into its application layer.
  • TCP/IP combines the OSI data link and physical layers into its network access layer.
  • TCP/IP appears simpler because it has fewer layers.
  • When the TCP/IP transport layer uses UDP it does not provide reliable delivery of packets. The transport layer in the OSI model always does.
